"Expressions in Yellow and Purple"
This abstract belongs to a body of paintings I've done over the past several years that include added texture by scratching the wet paint with a putty knife or other similar tool, scribbles made with permanent markers, colored pencils, etc., and the use of collage. This particular painting has three poems included on it as collage. See the detail shots below so that you can read the poems. This painting was originally a failed attempt at I'm not sure what exactly, started in 2007 in the use of just two colors and their kin, namely, yellow and purple. The painting, though, lacked something and so I decided to revise it extensively in 2008. I added some ancillary colors and, of course, added all of the collage. You might note that some of the collage consists of pieces of painted raw and unstretched canvas which have been ripped into square and rectangular shapes, an unusual and interesting trademark of many of my works. The result, I think, is a rather pleasing painting that can at times jar the senses just a bit at the same time. This is one painting that does not quite let the mind rest.
The painting is 24" x 48". It runs for $100. The entire painting is finished off with a coat of flat Mod Podge as a sealant and to protect the collage items and prevent them from peeling off or yellowing over the years. The edges of the painting are painted a deep purple, so if you are on a rather limited budget and can't quite afford to frame this piece should you buy it, the painted edges do give a finished look to the work, much as a nice frame would, so one could forego framing for a time, or indefinitely, for that matter.
